Throughlines - how to keep your presentation on track

Updated: 21 hours ago

Hello folks - do want your presentations and talks to hold a stronger theme?

You’ve heard of story threads, what about a throughline?

Ask yourself this… Why do some talks stay with you and others unravel the moment they end?

Well the difference is often a strong throughline. Think of it like a single idea, question or theme that creates tension; pulling the threads of the talk forward towards a meaningful and inevitable conclusion.

Throughlines offer structure, but more importantly they offer support - to you and to your audience. Audiences can only hold so much and with a good throughline their cognitive load reduces and gives them a path to follow. And that path creates something powerful and wonderfully attractive - curiosity: where is this going?

Throughlines are a structural glue that act as a guide to include only relevant information, helping the speaker cut out unnecessary content and structure the talk for a clear, logical progression.

A strong throughline builds tension, keeps anticipation alive and helps the audience to maintain focus and remain engaged.

Without a throughline something else happens. Talks become a series of points or disconnected concepts. Ideas float but don’t meet. Endings feel contrived. So rather than the talk being a vibrant tapestry it’s more like spaghetti thrown at a wall.

Forget a series of statements or facts, memorable talks are a journey

With a strong throughline your audience doesn’t just hear it, they feel it.

So how can you create a strong throughline in your talks or presentations?

Well, think of an opening question worth answering. What is the central thread, or throughline you want the audience to follow and where do you want it to lead?

Because if you don’t pick a throughline, your audience will feel the absence of one.

All the best,

Paul n Vic

TRY IT OUT!: 🎯 Your weekly improv-infused activity for everyday success

Spaghetti vs Tapestry Aim: To help participants feel the difference between disconnected ideas and a coherent throughline.

Outcome: That throughlines build clarity, create engagement and allow for an easier ending to formulate when preparing talks.

How it works: Can be played solo, in pairs or in a group.

Round 1 Spaghetti (30-45 sec): Speak on a topic with no intention to connect ideas

Round 2 Tapestry (30-45 sec): Using the same topic, but consciously link every idea back to a central theme

Reflections: The contrast makes the throughline felt instantly. What changed in round two? How easy was it to find an ending?
